Description
What is involved in monitoring earthquakes and landslides in Alpine glaciers? With Agnès Helmstetter from the Institut des sciences de la Terre.
By analysing seismic signals, it is possible to locate the source of an earthquake and determine its magnitude. The sensors detect not only earthquakes, but also all the phenomena that produce ground vibrations: rockfalls, snow avalanches, landslides, falling seracs, subglacial water flows, rapid sliding at the base of glaciers, eruptions and explosions.
Scientific research is studying how these events interact with each other and how they are influenced by external factors, such as global warming.
A drink will be served at the end of the lecture.
